Our Story

Our Story

I'm just a middle aged guy, with a hairy back. I live on Kent Island, MD, just across the Chesapeake Bay from Washington DC.  Having a hairy back absolutely sucks.  Keeping it cleanly shaved is a monumental task with the tools that were available.  Having somebody help is an embarrassment.  It's just no fun. So, if you're like me, you might shave it a few times a year before a vacation or some event where you know you'll be bare. And you probably just keep your shirt on for the many other times throughout the year when you'd like to be shirtless.

Having tried every kind of back shaver out there, from the wands with machetes on the end, to the one that uses a disposable razor that sticks into a rubber tip on a stick, to the electric ones that fold 18 different ways, they are all crap.

Most don't shave very closely.  They all require trying to look over your shoulder into a mirror which is painful.  They all require some sort of contortion to try to reach different areas of the back.  And they are all very time consuming.

I had a better mousetrap.  What if a back shaver could actually use high end razors designed for the face? What if the back could be shaved without looking over your shoulder?  What if it could be done quickly, so fast that it could become part of your daily or weekly routine?  All issues I could solve.

So I came up with the device I am selling here. But what do I call it?  I searched GoDaddy for the most common url expecting to get ideas to pick from, but low and behold the domain BackShave.com was available.  Say what!!!  So I had a name.

I then set out to design the product on CAD, and print out prototypes on my 3D printer.  I probably have 600 different versions of the product or components to find perfection.  In its current form I think it is pretty close. But because it is 3D printed for now, I'll be able to make changes on the fly as more get out into use.

In late 2023 I filed for my patent. I began to refine the design to make it more suitable for production and assembly, tested various 3D printers, and have dozens of trial users sending me feedback.  Early 2024 all my ducks are in a row to begin selling these to the public.

For now, I'll be producing these on a 3D print farm that can output a pretty significant number of units per day.  I have a staff of my children, staff from my other company, and some dedicated employees helping to build, assemble and ship units.  Once I hit a certain threshold of sales, and am confident in the design I'll invest in the tooling for mass production.

The current 3D printed construction of the BackShave is rugged enough to last for years.  Functionally, it is 100%.  It might be a year or more before I switch to injection molded construction, so don't wait to buy one.  I am confident in the BackShave in its current build. I really appreciate all of our early adopters, and want to hear your feedback.  Please use the Contact Us link below to submit your feedback.

The last thing I want to say, is to have realistic expectations. If you have a thick beard on your face, you don't try to shave it with a razor.  You'd normally trim it short with clippers, then shave it close with a razor.  Your back is no different.  If your hair is super thick then get it clipped short before using the BackShave. The BackShave can then be used every few days to keep your back smooth, never allowing the hair to grow thick again.  Used like this, it will take you less than a minute. It is a whole new way to handle back hair. The easiest way.
